Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. — Hebrews 9:22
I believe this verse serves as one of the most powerful reminders in all of Scripture. In our world, we often attempt to “clean up” ourselves through positive thinking, breaking bad habits, or simply trying harder. But our verse reminds us of a stark truth: sin isn’t a smudge that can be wiped away with effort; it is a debt that requires a life.
Under the Old Covenant, the Tabernacle served as a powerful reminder of this sacrifice. Nearly every vessel and curtain was blessed with blood to dedicate them for God's use, emphasizing their special significance. This wasn’t because God is “bloodthirsty,” but because sin results in death (Romans 6:23), and only through the giving of life (symbolized by the blood) could justice be satisfied and a pathway be made for people to come close to a holy, holy, holy God.
The word “almost” in our verse softly hints at the promise of what was to come. While animal sacrifices could ceremonially cleanse the outside, they could never fully purify the conscience or completely remove sin. They served as a shadow, guiding us toward the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus Christ, offering hope and fulfillment.
When Jesus shed His blood on the cross, He wasn’t just going through a ritual; He was fulfilling the most important requirement for our freedom. His blood doesn’t just cover our mistakes—it cleanses our past, present, and future, welcoming us into an everlasting relationship with the Father.
Remember the significance today: your forgiveness is truly valuable—it wasn’t easy and came at a great cost, as the Son of God gave His life for it.
Instead of trying to “earn” your way back to God’s good graces, remember that the price has already been paid in full. There's nothing more you need to do to be loved and accepted.
Walk with confidence. Thanks to the “shedding of blood,” please remember that you're not just “tolerated” by God – you are completely forgiven and made pure. Feel empowered to walk confidently in this truth.
Heavenly Father, thank You so much for the precious blood of Jesus. Please help me to always cherish my forgiveness and never take it for granted. When I feel overwhelmed by my mistakes, remind me that the price has already been paid and my sins are washed as white as snow. Guide me to live today filled with the freedom and joy that come from Your full grace. Amen.
Walking by Faith,
Gene
