The Christian life is often seen as a continuous effort, a relentless push to accomplish more, improve ourselves, and follow every rule. However, Jesus paints a different picture in John 15. Instead of urging us to strive constantly, He invites us to simply abide. He calls us to a gentle, obedient rest that brings peace and connection.

To abide is to make our home in Christ. It’s a warm place of security and dependence, not a source of anxious effort. Think of a branch—no need to strain to produce grapes; it just stays connected to the vine. The life-giving sap flows freely, and fruit naturally follows. Our obedience isn’t a heavy yoke we carry alone; it’s simply the lovely expression of a life closely connected to the True Vine.

This abiding is where obedience and rest beautifully come together. When we rest in Christ's finished work, in His presence, and in His strength, our obedience naturally flows from gratitude and love, rather than from fear or a desire to earn favor. We don't obey to be loved; we obey because we are loved.

Are you trying to do everything on your own today, or are you taking a moment to rest in Him? Remember, it's okay to pause and find comfort in His presence.

Which parts of your life could benefit from a closer relationship with the Vine?

Heavenly Father, we thank You for not asking us to produce fruit on our own. Please teach us what it truly means to abide in Jesus. Help us to find rest in Him, so that our obedience becomes a joyful response to Your unfailing love and an easy result of staying connected to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
