But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” — Luke 10:41-42

It’s common for us to wear our busyness like a badge of honor, but Jesus’ words to Martha remind us that our constant "doing" might actually pull us away from the more meaningful "being" with Him. Martha was simply practicing hospitality and serving her Lord, and she wasn't doing anything wrong. However, she found herself immersed and highly engaged in a multitude of tasks. Her heart was pulled in many directions by the pressure of details, which can lead to feelings of anxiety and even resentment towards her sister. Remember, sometimes stepping back and embracing quiet moments can bring us closer to what truly matters.

Jesus lovingly called out, "Martha, Martha," not to criticize her efforts but to gently invite her to shift her focus. He shares a heartfelt truth: although many things are wonderful, only one thing truly matters most.

Mary chose to sit at Jesus' feet and listen to His words, understanding that simply being with the Savior is worth more than any task she could do. In today’s busy world, we often feel "anxious and troubled about many things"—worrying over deadlines, chores, and endless expectations. Jesus lovingly invites us to put down those worries and find our true rest in Him first. Remember, our acts of service should come from our close relationship with Him, not take its place.

Our challenge this week:

Identify Your "Martha" Tasks: Think about the positive things in your life that might be pulling your attention away from what truly matters most.

Prioritize His Presence: Before diving into your to-do list today, take just five minutes to sit peacefully, pray, or read a few uplifting verses—choose the "good portion" first.

Listen for His Voice: Practice listening like Mary, creating space for God to speak to you through His Word before you share your requests with Him.

Heavenly Father, I humbly admit that I often get caught up in the busy details of life. Please help me tune in to Your gentle voice when I feel anxious or troubled. Guide me to select the better part—sitting at Your feet and resting in Your presence. Let my service today be a joyful outflow of my love for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
