David writes in Psalm 23:4— “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

The October 7th attacks brought a dark awakening to the world. For Israel and the Jewish community, it was a day of terror and sorrow, reminiscent of the Holocaust, showing humanity's brokenness—innocent civilians murdered, families targeted, vulnerable kidnapped. Such evil evokes fear, grief, and confusion.

As Christians, we remember that even in dark valleys, we're not alone. Faith isn't a shield against suffering but an anchor during life's storms. Psalm 23 assures us God is with us in the valley, offering comfort and protection. Though pain persists, God is near to the brokenhearted and weeps with us.

Then in Psalm 122:6, David writes this call to lament and to pray— “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! “May they be secure who love you!”

Our faith urges us to respond to this horrific event with lament and prayer. We should grieve with those mourning—Israeli families or innocent Palestinian civilians caught in the crossfire. The heartbreaking images evoke empathy and compassion, acknowledging the profound tragedy that affects all involved.

The Bible instructs us to pray for Jerusalem's peace, not just to end hostilities but for God's peace through Jesus Christ. We can pray for all regional people—Israeli and Palestinian—to find security in him, and for: Comfort for the bereaved and healing from trauma. Release of hostages and civilian safety. Wisdom for leaders pursuing peace. Truth over propaganda. Christians to proclaim the hope and gospel message amid turmoil.

Heavenly Father, our hearts are heavy with October 7, 2023. We come with grief, fear, and trust in your plan. We pray for those affected by violence in Israel and Gaza. Comfort the brokenhearted, heal the traumatized, and bring justice for the innocent. We ask for the safe return of captives, wisdom for leaders, your peace, and that your gospel spread, leading many to hope and salvation. Amen.
