I’ve often heard messages on Matthew 28:19-20 while raising support for foreign missions, reminding Believers that Jesus' last words are our first command. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Jesus begins the Great Commission by stating, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me" (Matthew 28:18, ESV). This shows that the command to evangelize comes from the one with ultimate authority. He also promises his ongoing presence: "And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age," assuring believers they are not carrying out this mission alone.

The main command is to "make disciples," which is an invitation into a transformative relationship with Jesus. This involves:

Going: Sharing the gospel with others.

Baptizing: Welcoming new believers into the faith community.

Teaching: Guiding them to follow Jesus's commands.

I end this devotional with some questions and a prayer:

  • Do you view evangelism as a partnership with Christ?
  • How can you make disciples where you are?
  • How can Jesus's promise of presence help you overcome fears when sharing your faith?

Lord Jesus, thank you for the privilege of participating in your mission. Forgive our hesitation and fear. Help us remember your authority and presence as we go, teach, and share your love. Amen.

Seeking to be all in until He comes,
