I have not seen this much division and hatred in the political arena as in the past several years, especially from professing believers. That being said, I think Paul’s words in Philippians 4:8-9 can help keep the followers of Jesus Christ focused. Sadly, I don’t always adhere to what Paul says, but I can honestly say I am trying. So here goes:
Philippians 4:8-9 encourages believers to focus on what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise. It also calls Christians to put into practice what they have learned, received, heard, and seen, with the promise that the God of peace will be with them.
In a political landscape often marked by division, Philippians 4:8-9 guides us to engage without letting negativity affect our thoughts or relationships with fellow believers. The passage highlights the importance of intentionally focusing on positive thoughts rather than allowing negativity and anxiety to dominate.
Applying Philippians 4:8 to political disagreements involves seeking and verifying information, engaging with respect, pursuing what is right and fair, avoiding gossip and personal attacks, and acknowledging positive aspects in others. Verse 9 emphasizes that practicing these principles leads to actions characterized by grace and love, resulting in the presence of the "God of peace". This peace guards believers' hearts and minds, shifting their focus to Christ above political affiliations.
Here is some food for thought to ask yourself before posting. (And trust me I need these just as much if not more than anyone else).
1. How often do you find yourself dwelling on the negative aspects of a political issue or person?
2. What steps can you take this week to intentionally fill your mind with what is true, honorable, and just, even when engaging in political topics?
3. How can you practice thinking the best of other believers who hold different political viewpoints?
As you consider the political noise around you, what are some specific "excellent and praiseworthy" things you can focus on instead?
Heavenly Father, the world around us is so loud and divided. We confess that we often let the anxieties and frustrations of political disagreement consume our thoughts. Forgive us for allowing discord to invade our hearts. We ask for the strength and discipline to focus our minds on what is true, honorable, just, pure, and lovely. Please help us to practice these things so that our actions reflect your grace. Guard our hearts and minds with your perfect peace, and remind us that our unity in Christ is far greater than any earthly division. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Seek First His Kingdom,
Gene
