Following two days of a ‘Nor-easter'—my first experience of such a storm in New Jersey—I found myself reflecting on Psalm 5:11: “But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you.”
After the storm knocked down branches from our tree, I wondered about the small birds caught in the fierce 60 mph winds. Tossed and drenched by
the rain, they were vulnerable to the elements. I imagine some spotted a dense bush, hid inside, and found shelter among the branches, finally resting and no longer afraid.
Psalm 5:11 describes this refuge, inviting us to run to God, our safe place. It also promises that those who seek the Lord won't just be safe but will rejoice and sing for joy. I’ll be waiting with bated breath to hear the birds chirping once again before they head south for the winter.
This joy doesn't come from changing circumstances but from God's unchanging protection. In a stormy world of disappointment, hardship, and uncertainty, a believer's joy is steady, rooted in God's faithfulness and the assurance that He is our shelter.
Consider your storms today: is your refuge in fleeting things or in God's steadfast character?
Heavenly Father, thank you for being our refuge. When storms rage, remind us to run to you for shelter. Help us find joy not in circumstances, but in your assurance of protection. Amen.
