The Psalmist states in Psalm 14:1, "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God." They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good."

In the Bible, 'fool' (Hebrew: nabal) doesn't mean someone lacking intelligence. Instead, it refers to a person morally and spiritually deficient—living as if God has no influence. This is a "practical atheism".

The core issue is the declaration: "There is no God." It's not just an idea but a heart posture leading to lawlessness and moral decline. David shows the result: a life of corruption and evil, with no one doing genuine good in God's sight.

This verse, quoted by the Apostle Paul in Romans 3:10-12, shows human depravity without God's grace. Without His help, we are all fools, corrupted and unable to please Him.

We may not openly claim "there is no God," but do we act as if He is absent from our daily decisions? Denying God's authority practically is foolishness.

The psalm shows that distancing from God leads to moral decay, like a branch withering when broken from a tree.

Acknowledging our foolishness and sin should lead us to seek God's mercy, as we fall short of His standard and need a Savior to cover us with His righteousness.

Heavenly Father, we admit we've sometimes acted foolishly, living as if we don't need You. Forgive our pride. Open our eyes to our need for Your grace and wisdom. Help us build our identity on You, our Rock and refuge. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Seeking Him,

Gene
