In Matthew 6:21, we read these words from Jesus: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Let me ask you, reader, what consumes your thoughts, ambitions, and motivates your actions? In this verse, Jesus states that our priorities reveal the condition of our hearts. He doesn't say we can choose our heart's position, but that it will follow our treasure.
Jesus warns that earthly treasures—wealth, status, possessions—are temporary and vulnerable, while heavenly treasures—faith, love, service, souls—are eternal. Investing in lasting values anchors our hearts in God's security and peace.
This verse urges an honest "treasure audit" of our lives.
Take time this week to ponder these questions:
Where do you spend your time?— Does it align with what you say you value?
How do you use your resources? — A look at your finances reveals your true heart location.
What are your deepest desires? — Do they point toward God or away from him?
Focusing on heavenly treasure reorients us around God's will, drawing our hearts to him and leading to genuine fulfillment and lasting joy.
Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding me that my heart follows what I treasure. Forgive me for focusing on temporary worldly things. Help me to store up treasures in heaven by seeking you first and serving others with love. Align my desires with your eternal purpose so all I do brings glory to your name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
