Two brothers walked through their father's large farm and found a peach tree full of peaches. They ate several and, while returning home, one brother gathered enough to make a peach cobbler and several jars of jam. The other brother cut a limb to start a new tree, which he planted and tended to. It eventually produced healthy crops of peaches for years.

Why retell that story? The Bible resembles a fruit-bearing tree. If we only hear the Word like the first brother, we have just enough peaches for later. But by memorizing the Word, like the second brother with his tree, we have the nourishment we need constantly.

One of the primary reasons we strive to memorize the scriptures is to prevent sin. As the psalmist expresses in Psalms 119:11, “Your word have I hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”

Let’s commit to hiding the Word in our hearts to avoid sinning against God.

Let me end with Paul’s words to young Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:15— Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.
