We examine two sections of Scripture today. The first is 2 Timothy 3:16-17, which states that “All Scripture is breathed out by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
The second is in Psalm 119:73—“Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn your commandments.”
According to 2 Timothy, God's Word is designed to help us grow spiritually and reach a state of spiritual maturity and completeness. Just like a skilled craftsman provides a manual to teach others how to use and care for their creation, God gives us His Word to direct us. It's worth noting that His Word is described as "breathed out,” meaning the very breath and life of God are woven into every page, making it a living, transformative document.
Our second passage, Psalm 119:73, begins with an intimate and profound truth: God’s hands made us. Like a master craftsman, He formed us with purpose and care. Those same hands that formed the mountains and shaped the seas also formed our inner selves. This creative work is the foundation for a humble request: "Give me understanding." The psalmist acknowledges that our minds are also a product of God's work, and we should surrender them to Him for proper guidance. As we gain a deeper understanding of our Creator, we should naturally want to learn His will.
These two passages speak to a powerful synergy in the life of a believer:
Creation confirms our purpose: Psalm 119 reminds us that our very existence is a testament to God's careful design. He did not create us to be left to our own devices, but with a divine purpose that can be discovered only by turning to Him.
Scripture equips us for our purpose: 2 Timothy 3 tells us how to fulfill that purpose. Scripture is "profitable" for four key areas of spiritual growth:
Doctrine: It teaches us what is true and forms the basis of our faith.
Reproof: It points out our errors and convicts us of sin, holding us accountable to God's standards.
Correction: It straightens our crooked paths and helps us get back on track.
Instruction in righteousness: It guides us in living a life that is pleasing to God.
So today, let’s ask God for His Divine Guidance:
Father God, Your hands made and fashioned us for a purpose. Thank you for not leaving us to figure out life on our own, but for breathing out Your Holy Word to guide us. Give us the understanding to learn Your commands, and use Your Scripture to teach, reprove, correct, and train us in righteousness. Make us complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work You have prepared for us, according to Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Blessings on your journey,
Gene
