“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
— Ephesians 6:10-11
To "stand strong" is often seen as a call for personal resilience, but the Apostle Paul’s instruction is rooted in dependence rather than self-reliance. In Greek, "be strong" is passive, meaning we are to be strengthened by an outside power.
Standing strong requires three deliberate focus shifts:
Acknowledge Your Source: True strength comes from being "in the Lord." Just like a branch needs to stay connected to the vine to bear fruit, we also need to stay close to Christ to find the strength to overcome challenges. While our own efforts might sometimes fall short, His "mighty power' is always reliable and strong.
Recognize the Battle: We often get distracted by "flesh and blood" conflicts—difficult coworkers, health issues, or financial problems. But Scripture reminds us that the real battle is spiritual. Recognizing the "schemes of the devil" helps us stop fighting with human weapons and instead use God's armor.
Active Stillness: Standing firm isn’t always about moving ahead; often, it means holding our ground and not letting ourselves be pushed back. It’s a kind of "stubborn faith"—choosing to trust in God's promises even when everything around us is uncertain. When we decide to stay still and trust, we open the door for God to take charge and fight our battles.
Is there a part of your life where you're trying to get through on your own strength? This week, consider taking a moment to gently set aside your own efforts and invite the Lord to fill you with His power. Remember, you don't need to carry everything alone because Jesus is your steady, unshakable foundation beneath your feet.
Whatever battle you’re facing today: You don’t have to be the Rock; you just have to stand on Him.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for providing me with all I need to stay strong. Please help me to stop depending on my own limited strength and instead trust in Your limitless power. When I feel exhausted, remind me that You are my steady anchor and safe refuge. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Steadfast in Faith, Strengthened by Grace,
