“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”— John 15:13

Memorial Day is much more than just a long weekend or the unofficial start to summer. At its heart, it’s a heartfelt moment to honor a debt we can never fully repay—the lives of brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in our nation’s armed forces.

This weekend, we come together to celebrate and reflect on Memorial Day, a time to honor the true cost of freedom. It’s a heartfelt reminder that our liberties—whether it's peaceful mornings or the freedom to worship—are not just given, but earned through the bravery and sacrifice of ordinary citizens who courageously stepped forward, often risking everything, to protect us all.

As Christians, this earthly sacrifice offers us a wonderful glimpse into a deep spiritual truth. When Jesus said in John 15:13, He was sharing the greatest, most selfless form of love that we can experience here on earth. Think of a soldier who bravely gives their life for their country — they embody this beautiful act of sacrificial love. They give up their own future so that we can enjoy ours.

As we decorate graves and honor our fallen heroes, their final earthly sacrifice gently guides our hearts upward to an even greater Savior. Our brave military members gave their lives to protect our temporary freedom here on earth, but Jesus Christ sacrificed Himself on the cross to secure our everlasting freedom from the chains of sin and death.

This weekend, let's take a moment to remember with appreciation. Honoring our fallen service members by living thankfully, safeguarding the freedoms they sacrificed for, and guiding others toward the true freedom found in Christ can be a meaningful tribute.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the extraordinary gift of freedom and for the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend it. Comfort the families who still grieve the loss of their loved ones, and fill them with Your peace. Help us never to take our liberties for granted, and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who laid down His life to give us eternal freedom. In Jesus' name, Amen.

With a thankful and grateful heart,

Gene
