“We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.: — Romans 6:9
In our everyday existence, it frequently appears as though we are subordinate to numerous influences: the urgency of approaching deadlines, the burden of previous errors, or the persistent apprehension regarding future uncertainties. Nonetheless, Romans 6:9 presents an unwavering truth that fundamentally alters our outlook.
When Paul states that death no longer has dominion over Christ, he is asserting a permanent victory (vv. 16-17). In the ancient world, 'dominion' referred to a territory over which a king exercised absolute authority. Death previously held this authority over humanity; however, following Jesus' resurrection, He not only escaped death but also abolished its rule (vv. 9, 15).
Why is this so encouraging for you today? Let me give you three reasons:
- Our Savior is Unstoppable: Because Jesus will “never die again,” His work on our behalf can never be undone vv. 24-25. His intercession for us v. 2 is eternal because He is eternally alive.
- Our Savior Possesses the Authority of “No Longer”: just as death no longer exerts dominion over Him, the power of sin in verses 6 and 22, as well as the fear of the grave, no longer dominates our lives. We are united with the One who holds the keys to eternal life.
- Our Savior is Our Solid Foundation: This is not a mere 'hopeful maybe”—it is something we “know.” Our conviction is founded upon a historical and physical resurrection (v. 9), which guarantees our future.
Today, whenever anything seeks to assert “dominion” over your heart—such as anxiety, guilt, or grief—remember that you belong to the Risen King. The most severe consequence this world can impose is death, and Jesus has already triumphed over it (verse 9). Walk in the newness of life (verse 26) today, assured that your Savior has already secured the victory.
Lord, thank You that the grave is empty and that death has lost its sting. When I feel overwhelmed by the struggles of this life, remind me that I am united with a living Savior. Help me to live today in the freedom of Your victory, knowing that nothing—not even death—can separate me from Your love. Amen.
Seeking to Walk in His Unshakable Grace,
Gene
