“To you, O LORD, I call; my rock, be not deaf to me, lest, if you be silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.” — Psalm 28:1
When heaven feels silent, it's understandable to think that God might have turned away or isn't listening. You share your heart, wait patiently for a response, but sometimes all you hear is a deep, quiet stillness. During those times, it's natural for your feelings to make you feel completely alone.
But faith gently guides us to look beyond our feelings and securely anchor our souls in the comforting truth of God’s Word. The Bible lovingly assures us that God’s silence is never His absence, and His quietness is never a sign of apathy.
The psalmist David understood what it was like to face the silence of heaven. Instead of offering shiny, superficial prayers, he poured out his honest, heartfelt longing directly to God. When your prayers feel like they’re bouncing off the ceiling, remember you're part of a long line of faithful believers who have wrestled with God's quietness. Job questioned, Habakkuk cried out, and even Jesus experienced the deep, dark silence on the cross when He asked, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).
So, why does a loving Father stay quiet? May I suggest at least three reasons:
1. He is working behind the scenes. Just like the quiet and stillness of that Saturday before Resurrection Sunday, God gently works behind the scenes, guiding events, softening hearts, and preparing answers you might not see right now.
2. He is growing your faith. Providing answers right away can sometimes make children feel entitled, but giving them time to wait helps them grow into more mature and trusting followers. The quiet moments remind us to let go of seeking constant emotional gratification and instead put our trust in His steadfast character.
3. He is drawing you closer. Sometimes, God isn't speaking to our ears because He wants to hold our hearts close. His quietness is like a gentle invitation for us to sit quietly in His presence, finding comfort in His love instead of constantly asking for His gifts.
So, when heaven is silent, do not stop praying. Lean into what He has already spoken in His eternal Word. When you cannot hear His voice, TRUST His unchanging heart.
Dear Lord, there are days when the quiet can feel overwhelming. When I struggle to hear Your voice or see Your hand at work, please shield my heart from doubt and despair. Remind me that You are always near, always listening, and still in control. Help me find comfort in Your character and trust in Your perfect timing. Grant me the strength to wait patiently in the stillness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Seeking to rest in His quiet love,
Gene
